Gentry R. P. Ferrell was born on July 10, 1950, in Lynchburg. After graduating from E. C. Glass High School, he attended Washington & Lee University, receiving his undergraduate degree, with high Honors in Journalism, in 1972, and, later, in 1976, his Juris Doctor degree. While in law school, he was a finalist in the Burks Moot Court Competition, served as Captain of one of the school's two National Moot Court teams, and was an assistant to Professor Edward S. Graves on the Virginia Code Revision Commission. In his brief career as a journalist, before returning to Washington & Lee for law school, Mr. Ferrell covered the launch of Apollo 14 and was accredited as a correspondent by the Department of Defense.

Mr. Ferrell has maintained an active practice in the fields of both business and property law and personal injury law since 1976. He has extensive international business experience, having represented Virginia-based clients in business negotiations and joint venture operations throughout Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. He is an active member of the Lynchburg, Campbell County and Virginia bar associations and in the past has been a member of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association and MENSA. In his home community, he has taught at Central Virginia Community College and has served as Chairman of the Local Human Rights Committee at the Central Virginia Training Center, the nation's largest facility for the mentally impaired. He and his wife Anne have five children.
